Star Cops (1987)

Only 9 episodes of Star Cops were ever broadcast. Unfair! Look how many episodes of the New Adventures of Flash Gordon they had! (No, I'm not going to search to find out how many episodes it had. Didn't I waste enough of my life just watching the commercials for it?) The series is a sci-fi cop show which is what probably spelled its doom from the beginning. Nathan is a cop on Earth who has no interest in going into space. Too bad because that is where he is heading! As Commander of the International Space Police Force, known colloquially as the Star Cops, Nathan Spring (David Calder) has to solve mysteries while dealing with life away from Earth.

The basic cop-out-of-water plot is well worn, but, like in Heat of the Sun, the writing and acting bring new life to the idea. Many of the mysteries have a sci-fi twist, but at the end of the day human motivation remains the same. This series should have run at least 6 more episodes. Maybe the world is ready for a cross-genre show! You know, like Firefly, Brisco County, that Alien hospital show...well, maybe the world is ready for a remake of Star Cops anyways.
