Kutner Deserved Better
It's normal in a long running series for an actor to have other opportunities pop up that makes them want to leave the show. Or they can't stand working on the show any longer. Or they aren't wanted on the show any more. Wayne Rogers, Pernell Roberts, David Caruso, Terry Farrell, Wil Wheaton, that chick on Roseanne - they left and went on to better things. Or not depending on how you look at it. So it isn't a big surprise it would happen on House.
At the end of the 2007-2008 season of House we lost Amber (Anne Dudek). I was crushed. She was a great character played by a super actress. I would go so far as to say she was the only consistently well written female character. So of course she had to die.
The 2008-2009 season brought up suicide so many times I hoped they weren't going to have a character attempt it. Nope, they had a character succeed at it. Kutner, for reasons unknown, blows his brains out. Yes, we get it. Life is random and even House can't solve every puzzle. It might even be the final thread to snap causing his barely hanging sanity to fall to the ground and shatter. Maybe.
I understand. Kal Penn wanted to leave acting for an opportunity he felt was more in line with his long term goals. Super. Good luck. Hope it works out for him. I really hope that Van Wilder 2: Rise of Taj movie doesn't come back to haunt him (or come back on our television screens).
What I don't understand is how they can take such an emotional event and make it completely devoid of pathos. It was oddly empty of all feeling. House, in spite of his logical, curmudgeony ways, is a passionate character. While he pursued Kutner's motivation, upsetting people in the process, they made it into a strictly intellectual exercise. They probably did this to remind us that House has a hard time expressing emotion because that's the type of thing we'd forget over 5 seasons. Right. House will bottle up his emotions until he cracks. Once that genie is freed from the bottle he'll surely descend into madness.
I've felt more emotion from a cat food commercial than I did from the episode. The Facebook tribute page was more evocative.
Remember all the fun we had with Kutner? House scaring him in the morgue. House scaring him with the cranberry juice and superstitions. Remember that time Kutner and Big Love went to see the magic show? Wasn't that fun?
Even if you didn't like his character, and I can't imagine that, you have to admit he deserved better.
