Kerr Avon - Elements of an Anti-Hero
Blake's 7 was a great show and of all the amazing characters on the show Kerr Avon was my favorite. Avon is the perfect anti-hero. Heck, he's the perfect character! As a member of the priveledged Alpha class and with his second-to-one (or two) computer skills Avon should of had the Federation at his feet. But that didn't happen and despite the prequel written by Paul Darrow, the actor who portrayed Avon, we never really know why. Clearly he was ambitious and had the breeding and skills so why did he turn to a life of crime? Did Anna Grant, the only person he ever trusted, turn him into a criminal? He needed enough money to steal her away from her husband and run far away. Then again, wasn't he already bent by then?
At any rate, Avon is betrayed by his true love, is tried for his crime of bank fraud, and is sentenced to the same penal planet as Blake, Jenna, Gan, and Vila. How fortuitous! On the way to the planet they escape on an alien space craft and Avon puts his skills to use helping Blake with his freedom fighting against the Federation. Now labeled a terrorist Avon has even fewer options, but he continues to look for ways to escape Blake and get away with the ship and the super computer ORAC. He never quite makes it even after Blake leaves the show. You could argue he does find a way to escape Blake with the series finale which is considered one of the greatest finales in history. If you've never watched it you should really give it a shot just so you can truly appreciate that finale!
